Insulation Removal in Illinois
Old, failing insulation can be removed so new insulation can fix the energy leaks in your home or building.
Illinois Spray Foam Insulation handles insulation removal as part of a practical retrofit process. We look at what is in the attic, walls, crawl space or commercial roof area, then discuss whether the material should stay, be topped off, or come out. Cellulose may settle over time. Fiberglass can settle less, but it still may not solve air leakage in an attic or crawl space. Foam products do not tend to settle like other insulation options. The correct plan depends on the building, the budget and the heat resistance needs.
When removal is worth discussing
Removal is worth discussing when insulation is old, failing, uneven, in the way of a retrofit, or simply not matched to the area where it was installed. Old homes tend to have energy leaks, and those leaks can be fixed by installing new insulation after the space is prepared. A new home or addition can be protected upfront, while an existing building may need cleanup before better material is installed. Removing the wrong material is not a sales tactic. It is a way to make sure the new insulation can actually do the job.
After removal, we can install open cell spray foam, closed cell spray foam, cellulose, fiberglass, foam board, polyisocyanurate, polyurethane board, polystyrene board and mineral wool. We work in attics, crawl spaces, interior walls, exterior walls, offices, pole barns, metal buildings and other residential and commercial spaces. If the next step is a new install, visit our pages for attic insulation, blown-in and cellulose insulation, crawl space insulation and commercial insulation.
Removal for retrofitting and sound control
Retrofitting is about improving an existing building rather than starting from scratch. That can mean removing tired insulation, sealing energy leaks and choosing a material that fits the way the space is used. In some projects, soundproofing is part of the goal. Soundproof insulation is often installed in interior walls to stop noise from leaking into other areas of the home or building. In others, the main issue is keeping dust, dirt and allergens out by closing small holes and cracks before new material goes in.
We provide insulation removal and replacement across Bloomington, Champaign, Chicago, Danville, Decatur, Peoria and Springfield. We can install any type of insulation you want after removal, and we will be direct about the tradeoffs between spray foam, cellulose, fiberglass, board products and mineral wool.

Questions
Common questions
Why remove old insulation at all?
Damp, settled or damaged material underperforms and gets in the way of a correct new install; removing it lets us inspect and fix problems while they are small.
Is removal done the same visit as the new install?
Usually yes. Most projects pair removal with the replacement insulation in one scheduled visit.
How is the old material handled?
It is bagged, removed from the building and hauled away by the crew.
